Kin (2015)

Kin is a voice based device that encourages interactions and gaming experiences among family members. Through learning the habits and emotions of family members, kin opens a door of a non-screen based solution for contemporary family interactions. Kin could potentially help to deal with issues such as teenage rebellion and childhood education for young families that overlooked important interaction due to the complexity of daily schedules.

Emotion Tracking


Those two images are screenshots from the program I wrote with a facial detection API to keep track of facial recognition and learn about user identities, moods and habits.

Kin observes emotions whenever possible and statistically gathering information and marks “critical event” from our daily lives. As a result, significantly exposure to repeated critical event without a fall back to normal thread will notify the family members (in the case of the video, Mom for Lisa’s continuous sad expressions)

Interaction Research

In order to find fluent and natural ways of interaction with kin, all of us have conducted research involves psychology of children and teenagers in using a device, collected surveys from various ages, and test and observe the kin and its interactions.



UI/UX Design (App on the Android)

A user interface for smart phones and tablets has been developed by my teammates and I configure Kin, receive notifications, and adjust settings. We also designed the behavior of light strips on the Kin to convey information in a more effective way. For example, a transition of light from blue to red indicate that there is a message for Lisa, and the light will only flash when Lisa is presented in the same environment.
